Billie Eilish at Bonnaroo, 6/9/2018
If they still have textbooks in the future, and someone (or some algorithm) is editing one on pop stardom in the social media age, they’d be remiss not to mention teenage sensation Billie Eilish. The L.A.-bred musician with the intense songs and delicate voice went viral with her debut single “Ocean Eyes” in 2016 (she was 14 years old then, and is 17 now) and hasn’t really slowed down. A November profile by The Ringer tabulates that her songs have been streamed more than 1 billion times. And that’s all without releasing an album.
That's about to change. Her first full-length When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? is set for a March 29 release. Her North American tour kicks off with performances at Coachella (we caught her at SXSW and Bonnaroo last year) and winds its way to Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheater on June 21, with Denzel Curry supporting. Tickets go on sale Friday, Feb. 8, at noon right here.
Below, check out noted horror fan Eilish’s eerie video for the Where Do We Go? track “bury a friend.” Think The Shining plus American Horror Story plus good, old-fashioned teenage self-loathing and you’re in the ballpark. The song features more heavily layered and processed vocals and unnerving instrumentation, showing a bit of a shift from the tracks that got Eilish’s foot in the door.
