Watch Daniella Mason Begin to Become 'Human' [Fresh Vid]

Dunno about you, but for me there never seems to be a wrong time to watch some reruns of Star Trek: The Next Generation. One of my favorite characters is Lt. Cmdr. Data, an android who studies human nature very closely in an effort to be more human. His digital brain works at blinding speed and his mechanical body can outperform any organic one in most respects. But it's still a challenge for him to function in the universe because he's incapable of understanding emotion on an intuitive level.

Emotional responses have a huge impact on how people communicate and how societies function — not to mention how much richer they make existence. For us humans, it's easy to lose sight of the importance of emotions in the struggle to get by in an extraordinarily complicated world. That's the idea at the core of "Human," a new song from pop champion Daniella Mason. 

“Last year I was in a workaholic mode for a few months and was working like 90-hour weeks,” Mason tells Refinery29, who premiered an excellent music video for the song. (There's a whole Q&A about the song and video that's worth your time to read.) “I was basically functioning like a machine, and I have a tendency to do that. My husband, during that time, would peek his head in every so often or bring me salt and vinegar chips. He kept me tethered to the human world. I remember saying out loud to him, ‘You remind me I’m not a machine. You remind me that I’m human.’ ”

"Human" is a track from Mason's follow-up to last year's self-titled album, an EP called Emotional State that's due on Sept. 21. It's slated to kick off a series of EPs collectively called State of Mine, with other installments called Physical State, Mental State and Spiritual State to come.
