See Adia Victoria Discuss the Drive to Make Art in 'You Don't Know How It Feels'

A few weeks back, Adia Victoria released an EP called You Know How It Feels, in which she rearranged and re-contextualized several popular songs in French (plus one original). The goal was to retell the stories in a way that gave more space and depth to women's perspectives.

"Instead of the imagined dream pop girl wishing for her man to come home," Victoria wrote in a statement that accompanied the tracks, "I reimagined the lyrics as sung by a lover scorned but still lovesick and obsessed. I wanted to keep the timeless feel of these songs while breathing into them a bit of modernity; sharpen the edges a bit."

In a new short film also titled "You Don't Know How It Feels," which premiered at Dangerous Minds, she expands a little on those ideas and how they relate to her drive to become an artist.

"When I'm creating, it's because I need to, because something is building up in me and there's nowhere to put it," she says in the film, which you can watch above. "It's inside of me, and I have to give it place to validate my existence. Because it's hard as a woman to have any bit of space. If we take up too much space, then the world shames us back into this tiny little area where we are allowed to exist, and there's no meaning there."
