Usually when a tour starts throwing around the word “legendary” to describe its bill, you can expect that they’re using a pretty liberal definition of “legend.” More often than not, it’s an anti-climactic parade of one-hit wonders putting in just enough effort to pull a paycheck.
Not this time, son! Municipal Auditorium will host “The Legends of Southern Hip-Hop” on March 25, featuring a stacked lineup of legitimate hip-hop royalty: Bun B, 8Ball & MJG, Mystikal, Juvenile (not, as the Facebook event claims, French synth-pop group Juveniles), Trick Daddy, and Project Pat.
Alright, maybe it’s a stretch to call Project Pat, who’s mostly known for being Juicy J’s brother, a legend — but look at the rest of that lineup! Although Bun B hasn’t been hustling as hard since the death of his partner Pimp C (and the subsequent dissolution of UGK), he’s one of the finest rappers in the game and a huge part of the reason why the South continues to reign over what hip-hop is in 2016. And that’s without mentioning prolific Memphis duo 8Ball & MJG, who have toiled in the underground for decades, or Mystikal, who has been circling a comeback since his funky 2013 cut “Hit Me.”
Tickets go on sale this Friday, Feb. 5, through Ticketmaster and are priced between $45 and $75. Or, you could take that money and catch the “I Love the 90’s” tour featuring Salt N Pepa, Vanilla Ice, and Coolio. Your call, I guess.
