Who here is familiar with the
WTF With Marc Maron Podcast? I'm an occasional listener, but I have a handful of friends who are obsessive — seriously, obsessive — listeners. Maron, long known for his routine as a neurotic, dark, introspective alt comic — or, "one of those weirdos who showed up in the '90s," as my parents might put it — has hosted his twice-weekly podcast since 2009. Each episode features probing, frequently surprisingly candid interviews with notables as diverse as John Hamm, Conan O'Brien and Zanies regular
Killer Beaz.
On Episode 289 of WTF, posted yesterday, Maron speaks with Jack White at White's Third Man Records here in Nashville. The episode begins with Maron driving up from Murfreesboro — he presumably stayed there on account of his recent Bonnaroo appearance — listening to Son House in preparation for his talk with White. In the interview itself, the two chat about Bonnaroo's Comedy Theatre, the reverence due a rock club as opposed to a rock festival — I generally agree, but it's a pretty sweeping generalization — Robert Johnson and the scariness of the blues, vague acknowledgment that White and Radiohead probably recently collaborated, The Gories and the whole Detroit rock scene, White's family, religion, guilt, performing (and the lack of "fun" therein), moving to Nashville, White's kids, George Jones, Jerry Lee Lewis, why Third Man Records was born, The Who, White's whole number-color thing, this especially funny Mitchell and Webb skit, sampling and more.
