One of the two best shows I saw was a backyard show for Amanar, a group from Mali who were in town to take part in a panel discussion on the role of music in West African politics for a political science conference at Vanderbilt. One of the guitarists, Dramane Toure, was an accompanist for the iconic Malian vocalist Khaira Arby, who passed away earlier this year. He is probably the single best guitarist I have ever seen. The other was Simon Joyner’s show at Soft Junk. People talk a lot about groups getting inside the songs. These songs were relaxed, lived-in, nuanced and worked out like an old baseball glove. I kept scanning the stage for bottles of mink oil. I’m sure the David Nance show at Third Man was also incredible — it’s a lot of the same people. —Chris Davis
Pistol Annies at the Ryman. It was their first full-length show in seven years, and Miranda Lambert escorted some drunk girl in the front row out by herself. —Liz Meade
