Last summer, Belmont-area DIY venue The Other Basement became the latest house-show venue in a string of casualties in the DIY community, closing its doors in the wake of a flood of construction and rising rent. Since then, former residents of the house have booked a plethora of shows elsewhere under the moniker The Other Booking, including last month's forty-hour punk marathon Nameless Fest.
The Other Booking's Kathryn Edwards (read more about her in a Q&A with sometime Scene contributor Tony Youngblood) recently secured a lease on a space in the Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood, with the intent of starting a new house venue to host all-ages shows, art events and more. By way of an ongoing IndieGogo campaign, Edwards has surpassed an initial $2,000 crowd-funding goal — a minimum just to get the doors open — but expenses mount quickly in this kind of endeavor. The campaign closes at 2 a.m. tomorrow morning, so don't wait to chip in what you can. That is, if you want to help grow the local culture of safe, all-ages friendly DIY spaces. A worthwhile cause indeed.
