National Nachos Day This Friday: Here Are Some Places That Serve 'Em

Nachos at Puckett's

Consider yourself properly notified: This Friday, Nov. 6, is National Nachos Day. It may be some other national holiday of sorts, but it is, above all else, a day to celebrate nachos.

Nachos lore indicates that the dish was invented in 1947 by Ignacio (Nacho) Anaya, a Mexican in the Mexico-Texas border town of Piedra Negras. One day, the restaurant host was charged with feeding some hungry American ladies and simply cut up some tortillas, melted some cheese on them and then topped it off with sliced jalapeños. It was a hit, and nachos soon spread in popularity throughout Texas as well as the rest of the States.

I am a fan of nachos myself, though I rarely order them in a restaurant (but I prepare nachos at home more frequently than I care to admit). So I asked Twitter for the best nachos in Nashville. Certainly, the nachos at just about any Tex-Mex restaurant are going to be good (I don't think I've ever had bad nachos), but I got a pretty solid list of some nachos to try.

Noted among the best nachos in Nashville: Edley’s barbecue nachos,Drifter’s vegetarian black bean nachos, and the nachos at Rosepepper, Calypso Cafe, Tavern, Bakersfield and El Burrito (the latter is at the Nashville Farmers' Market).

Chuy’s gets a nod for having free nachos that are merely passable but can be improved with jalapeño ranch dip. M.L. Rose got multiple mentions for its nachos, which come loaded; toppings include barbecue pork, chicken, brisket or black beans.

Unexpected mentions included Puckett’s nachos, which also come with options of barbecue pork, chicken or brisket, as well as Tin Roof, where you can ask for the nacho pad and mark off the toppings you want for build-your-own nachos. Any great nachos in Nashville that we missed? Let me know in the comments.
