There is no shortage of restaurants in Nashville offering fare from Mexico or Central American countries, but there’s long been a shortage of other Latin cuisines, especially the island ones. Tucked away in Berry Hill, Merengue Cafe is attempting to remedy this problem, serving Cuban, Puerto Rican and Dominican cuisine — and everything this writer has tried to date has been delicious. The $9 plates, with your choice of meat, rice, bean and salad, are not to be missed.
But those portions are very big, and I keep coming back to the bollitos as a hearty snack. Stuffed with either potato and cheese or yuca and cheese, the lightly fried croquettes are the perfect mid-afternoon repast. An order of two costs $3.99, and you can wash them down with a fresh mango juice. You might just forget you’re in Nashville for a minute.
