Though it’s tucked away at a fairly inconspicuous location — on the corner of 16th and Ordway in East Nashville’s Lockeland Springs neighborhood — Sweet 16th is not a well-kept secret. Visit the bakery any morning (except for Sunday and Monday, when they’re closed) and you’re likely to find a line at the counter at least three or four people deep. There are plenty of options on the menu, from freshly baked cupcakes, lemon squares and chocolate chip bars to more savory items, including lasagna, banana-jam-and-Nutella sandwiches and quinoa salads. But the biggest hit in the shop is the Breakfast Sandwich, a cheddar scone filled with a hearty portion of Sweet 16th’s egg-and-cheese casserole. The scone comes tender and steaming hot, just the right density to support the casserole without falling apart. It’s a phenomenal bite, cheesy and soft and nothing like the dry, crumbly bricks that pass for scones at most coffee shops. The sandwich is somewhat modest in size, but it’s plenty big enough for a quick breakfast — and at just $2.95, you can grab a couple of them if you feel like pigging out in the a.m.
