Like craft beer, the world of hard ciders runs the gamut from mass-produced products to complex beverages that genuinely pay attention to the concept of “craft.” For example, at Yazoo Brewing, the extremely talented Brandon Jones runs their “Embrace the Funk” program along with Yazoo owner Linus Hall. The ETF offerings include award-winning sours, cask-aged beers and other innovative brewing and aging techniques to create truly unique beers that are ephemeral and cellarable.
That’s why it’s so exciting to hear that Yazoo’s new Painted Porch Ciders program will also be under the auspices of Jones, who already has so much experience in the European styles that have traditionally created the most interesting ciders.
"We are thrilled to introduce Painted Porch ciders to the market,” says Jones in an official announcement about the new product line. "These crisp and dry ciders are a labor of love, combining our passion for quality ingredients with a commitment to creativity and innovation. Using a blend of juice sourced from Tennessee farmers and Northeastern state producers really provides a pleasing tart, bright and soft finish cider."
Many ciders are made using yeasts that are more traditional in Champagne and wine production than in beer brewing, and Jones has worked with them many times in the ETF program. He promises the Painted Porch ciders won’t be created only for cider snobs, but will be approachable and easy to drink while still complex and interesting. I trust him!
Ciders also have the benefit of being naturally gluten-free if that’s something you’re concerned about. Jones has created a trio of recipes to launch with: a 5 percent ABV Base cider, an 8 percent ABV Imperial cider for those seeking a bolder flavor profile, and a 6 percent ABV Cherry co-fermented cider for a touch of fruity sweetness. Expect to see 12-ounce cans available in grocery stores and other select retail outlets across the region as the rollout continues throughout March.
