The Midtown building long home Golden Coast — best known for its all-you-can-eat buffet with Americanized Chinese fare — is slated for a new concept.
According to a permit, Shabu Shabu Hot Pot and Barbecue is slated to eventually operate within the one-story modernist brick building opened in 1970 and located at 1722 West End Ave.
The owner of the future restaurant was not available for comment on Monday.
Brentwood-based Lee Consulting Engineers is handling the interior renovations, with a permit issued and valued at $80,000.
Of note, Golden Coast offered a weekend buffet with various authentic Chinese cuisine items. It was the only all-you-can-eat-style Chinese restaurant located in either downtown or Midtown.
The Scene could not determine when Golden Coast opened. But the restaurant, according to sources, is believed to have operated at the intersection of West End and 18th avenues for at least 25 years. It closed in late 2019.
Shabu-shabu is a Japanese hot pot dish where thinly sliced meat and vegetables are boiled in water and served with dipping sauces.
Across 18th from Golden Coast and also fronting West End Avenue is Inchin’s Bamboo Garden, which serves a fusion of Indian and Chinese cuisine.
