Matt Moore is one of my favorite local food writers, and he’s been pretty prolific with five lifestyle/cookbooks under his belt. His latest project is a new instructional cooking series named Serial Griller based on his book of the same title.
The first three episodes of the series dropped over Labor Day weekend on Hungry Channel, which is a free, ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channel available through various streaming and video-on-demand outlets. While that makes it sound like it should be easy to find, it’s a little complicated.
For example, Hungry Channel lives in the Samsung TV channel lineup of my Samsung TV, but its channel number is literally 2118, so you probably won’t scroll all the way through the guide to get to it. The Hungry Channel is also available on Twitch.tv and Vizio SmartCast TV or as an app on Redbox and Rakuten, or through the Janson app on Amazon Fire and Roku.
Believe it or not, I’m not through yet. You can also find Hungry Channel on a bunch of other services that I swear are either totally made0up or I’m being punked. To wit: Xumo, LocalNow, TCL, ONO, Xiaomi and Vidaa. I consider myself pretty tech-savvy, but I felt like my brain was about to explode trying to wade through all these options, and I have great sympathy for someone trying to break through in this environment of new media.
So let me make it easy for you: If you want to see Matt’s show, click here.
Your reward for plowing through the internet is a very entertaining and informative show! Moore is quite comfortable in front of the camera thanks to many appearances on local, regional and national television. He is literally at home in these 24-minute episodes, which are filmed in his own backyard.
There’s definitely some local flavor to the show with stops at Roy Meat Service to pick up some ingredients, Tomato Fest references, background music soundtracked by Tim McDonald and a visit from alt-country performer Thad Cockrell, who stops by to sing for his supper.
Moore is a born teacher, offering tips and tricks while demonstrating direct and indirect cooking on gas grills and over charcoal, preparing recipes from apps to mains to desserts. He also mixes cocktails and shares family stories and his own history cooking over live fire. Over the course of three episodes, he demonstrates easy recipes for chicken wings, a Hemingway burger, his Aunt Mary’s hot dogs, pork gyros, a seared flank steak with a board sauce and more.
I always enjoy learning from Matt, and now that I’ve done the hard work of finding it for you, set aside 90 minutes and check out Serial Griller!
