Tequila 101

I don’t want to panic any of my favorite Tennessee and Kentucky distillers, but [whispering] the whiskey industry hasn’t been doing so well lately. Agave-based spirits like tequila and mezcal have been pretty much the only spirits categories to show consistent growth over the past couple of years, in both sales and volume. The “premiumization” of tequila has been a big part that growth, and specific luxury brands like Compoveda Tequila have been major contributors.

The Jalisco-based company is best known for aging tequilas for a much longer time than most companies, using a combination of French and American oak barrels to add extra character to the agave. Some of the barrels previously held Californian red wines, so there are all sorts of unique influences that contribute nuances to the final product.

Compoveda is teaming up with the educators at Liquor Lab for a 90-minute exploration of tequila on Thursday, April 23, starting at 6:30 p.m. at their downtown location (144 Second Ave. N., Suite 10). Students will sample from the line of Compoveda tequilas and learn about the process of barrel aging. They will also go step by step through the creation of a few cocktails, picking up valuable techniques to use in their home bars. Students can also enjoy some small bites during the class.

Tickets are $70 per student, and you get to consume your classwork. Purchase your tickets in advance at the Liquor Lab website.
