After 15 years of serving up delicious hot dogs — and, arguably, even better fries — Hot Diggity Dogs on Ewing Avenue has closed its doors.
Hot Diggity Dogs hasn't been open for business in nearly a month. The restaurant has had a note on its door for the past few weeks saying it would be closed from Dec. 18-Jan. 15. But now, it seems, Hot Diggity won't open back up as planned.Â
In a note posted on Instagram, owners Layla Vartanian and Gayle Davis write that it is "time to do other things."
"I cherish all the new friendships, interesting conversations, and generous words spoken through the years," the note reads. "There have been lots of unforgettable moments, and fond memories I'll keep with me forever. Thanks to all of YOU, this restaurant was one of the most fun and most rewarding experiences I have ever had."
Not long after Hot Diggity Dogs opened, Scene contributor Kay West wrote this:
I'd like to offer a warning to the selfish people who have already discovered Hot Diggity Dogs and would like to keep its existence, and its eight seats, a big fat secret—particularly those of you from Chicago, who have communicated amongst yourselves the arrival of Windy City wieners via some secret ChiTown code. You know who you are. The jig is up. I'm spreading the news. After telling everyone I've spoken with in the last week to hightail it to this little eatery, I am now publicly letting the dog out of the pen. Hot Diggity Dogs is the best regional food specialty imported to Music City since Pittsburgh landed on Second Avenue at Piranha's Bar and Grill, where they pile up their signature trucker sandwiches of meat, fries and slaw between two slices of bread. Thank you, Yankee carpetbaggers, for crossing the Mason-Dixon Line to share some of your fine native customs and broaden our dining horizons.
