Cajun Restaurant Spicy Boy's Slated for East Nashville

A Cajun restaurant featuring po’ boy sandwiches is planned for East Nashville at the intersection known for Mas Tacos Por Favor and The Pharmacy Burger Parlor.

To be located at 924 Mcferrin Ave. in the Maxwell neighborhood, the restaurant will be called Spicy Boy’s and will be run by the Cheney family. Justen Cheney, a former bartender at both Peg Leg Porker and Night Train Pizza (both located in the Gulch), will serve as the primary owner and manager of the restaurant business.

The Cheneys acquired the property in May 2019 for $695,000, according to Metro records. The Sweet Bean, a tiny coffee and cotton candy shop, previously operated from part of the former home on the site (pictured).

Cheney says the plan is to have Spicy Boy’s operational by summer 2021. A permit, valued at $125,000, has been issued, with Ochoa Brothers Construction handling the job. To date, the Cheneys have never owned a restaurant or a commercial property.

Cheney says the work will involve updating the current space and adding an outdoor dining area that can be covered during the cold season. In addition, a large deck will be added. The Spicy Boy’s indoor dining and kitchen will operate from the roughly 900-square-foot lower space of the former home, she says, adding that the upstairs space will be used for storage.

“We know people enjoy having the option of eating either indoors or outdoors,” Cheney says.

Justen Cheney devised the Spicy Boy’s concept and will be assisted by sister Sara Cheney, who is expected to serve as bar manager. Sara has experience in the catering industry and also previously worked at Peg Leg Porker.

Spicy Boy’s will be located near the intersection of Mcferrin and Cleveland Street/West Eastland Avenue. Also at the intersection are restaurants Slow Burn Hot Chicken and Lyra.
