Thursday night at The ’58, indie-rock singer-songwriter Tommy Womack will celebrate the release of Live a Little, his excellent ninth studio album. Recorded in Brooklyn with producer Eric Ambel, the album is a powerful artistic statement about dying and living, which Womack addresses with both irony and humor. His use of irony is especially evident on the album’s first single “Just Another Shooting,” a commentary on school shootings written from the perspective of a die-hard gun owner. His twisted sense of humor shines brightest on the punkish “Horny Mormon,” a hilarious take on the worldly desires of Mormon missionaries that’s already a fan favorite. Womack plans to perform those two songs and four or five others from Live a Little at the release show. “I’m really sweeping the floor and cleaning up the house with the new record,” he tells the Scene. Womack will be accompanied at the show by David Harvard on guitar, Dan Seymour on bass, Mary Hull on keys, Womack’s son Nathan on drums and longtime collaborator Lisa Oliver-Gray on backing vocals. In addition to the new material, Womack’s set will include “Sweet Hitchhiker,” a deep cut from his first solo album, as well as a couple of songs from his work with Government Cheese.
