"The Minotaur's Maze," Germán Rojas

Germán Rojas brought a suite of large oil-on-canvas paintings to Ryan Rado’s Rock Wall Gallery back in November, after last year’s Best of Nashville issue had already hit the streets. A Dimly Lit Path highlighted the painter’s signature combinations of antique subjects and contemporary palettes in figurative scenes that evoke historical and mythological narratives. Rock Wall is named for the raw, exposed rock surfaces of the walls along the corridor, and Rojas’ works made a perfect match with the gallery’s medieval-dungeon vibes. It was the kind of combination of art and space that simply can’t happen in a standard white cube, and it was a great demonstration of the unique strengths that Nashville’s alternative art spaces can conjure from their often peculiar interiors.
