If Willy Wonka decided to get into the book business, I imagine he’d open a shop similar to Fairytales. The quaint East Nashville book and toy shop always smells faintly of sugar cones (thanks to neighbors Pied Piper Creamery), and the shelves are lined with whimsical toys, books, puppets and puzzles too charming and colorful to resist. Sure, it’s technically a store for kids, but adults will have no problem passing the time flipping through illustrated classics from their own childhood or admiring the assortment of thoughtful, educational and magical toys for tykes of all ages. (No Barbies or Legos here.) And once you finally settle on a gift (or 12), try your hardest not to smile as you bound down the steps with a gift bag overflowing with a rainbow of tissue paper and a tangle of colorful ribbons fluttering from the handle.
