Hmmm…how to describe the difference between seeing The Red Shoes on the big screen and watching it on TV. You’ve seen Avatar in IMAX 3-D, right? Imagine watching it over your co-worker’s shoulder—on a cell phone. As Lawrence of Arabia remains the benchmark for epic spectacle, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s 1948 dazzler may be the movies’ most vivid demonstration of the power of color cinematography. A knockout restored print now touring the country, being touted by Powell’s great admirer Martin Scorsese, stops at The Belcourt for a four-day run starting Friday, Jan. 8. To cap the engagement, the theater hosts another of its smash “Wine, Food & Film” events featuring wines from Village Wines and various delectables from Whole Foods preceding the Monday-night screening. Tickets are $25; get tickets early from the theater box-office, as previous events have sold out quickly.
