Studio Visit: Luke Stockdale's Sideshow Sign Company

Luke Stockdale is a pretty incredible artist. The fact that he's technically a graphic designer is beside the point. Stockdale, who is Australian by birth, has operated under the banner "Whiskey Theatre" for 10 years, and recently expanded his brand to include

Sideshow Sign Co.

, in what he says was really just an excuse to get away from a computer screen. The results are these massive light-up marquee letters, vintage-feeling charts (shadow puppets! Periodic tables!) and signs. He's off to a great start: When he got a recent call from Nike, he thought maybe he'd misunderstood a caller named "Mike," but was pleasantly surprised — the corporation had mysteriously tracked him down for a job.

He and his wife Jasmin Kaset, who has been featured in many a Scene/Cream write-up herself, work out of a garage-turned-woodshop in Berry Hill. I stopped by to check out the work they've been doing last week, and while there's not many examples of the products he sells — they've been selling so quickly it's hard to keep up — there was still plenty to look at, not to mention that fantastic woodshop smell.
