This Virginia resident puts an engaging, uptown spin on down-home music. Her original acoustic songs draw on the oldest, most timeless of American popular sounds, from breezy New Orleans jazz to simple, stark Appalachian folk. But her sunny spirit and clever lyrical narratives have a springy clarity to them, and her smart persona gives everything a sweet, hazy hue. Her most recent album, 2007’s Keep Your Silver Shined, lifted the Virginia resident’s national profile. She’s now finishing its follow-up, and she makes this off-night stop on her way home from the annual Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis, where her busy performance schedule—12 appearances in two days—should have the music well-oiled when she hits town.
