When she was in her 40s, Sandra Shelton opened Pangaea Nashville, a store that came alive around her vision of sharing things she’d found during her travels to Mexico and across the Southwest. Now, a little more than three decades later, Shelton will be closing Pangaea's doors.
“After 31 years and two moves in the Belmont-Hillsboro neighborhood, I have decided that the time is right to retire, be free to travel and spend more time with friends and family,” Shelton said in a statement Wednesday.
After the announcement was made, many loyal Pangaea customers took to Facebook to share that they aren’t quite ready to let Shelton's retail spot go. One commenter said she will always have fond memories of the beloved $6 earring rack in the store.
“I have loved creating this business and working alongside all my amazing employees," said Shelton. "I will miss them tremendously. Thank you to all the customers who have shopped with us through the years. It has been a great pleasure getting to know so many of you.”
Shelton, who worked as a social worker and paralegal before opening Pangaea in 1987, said the store will likely remain open until early February. Until then, everything in the store is 30 percent off.
“I have worked through the holiday season for so many years, and I am looking forward to enjoying life from the other side of the counter."
