Magic All Stars
When: 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28
Where: Bongo After Hours Theatre
Ken Bernstein’s Bongo After Hours Theatre has been a constant home to musicians, standups, improvisers, theater artists and entertainers of every kind. Now you can add card-sharking and crowd-pleasing prestidigitation to the lineup.
For a couple months running, Bernstein has hosted this evening of “all-stars” — veteran card-trickers, sleight-of-hand masters and even an otherworldly mind reader or two — finding a receptive audience that includes the kind of folks who feel right at home in nightclubs, small theaters, casinos, Branson and Las Vegas, plus basically anybody else who simply digs magic tricks and likes to see them performed live.
Circuit pros like Jason Michaels, Kevin King and Steve Bargatze have previously appeared at Bernstein’s venue, and schedule allowing, they’ll show up again. Guaranteed to perform this weekend are Tom Vorjohan, a Cincinnati native who quit his day job 15 years ago to pursue magic full-time; Nashville-based Gary Flegal, who specializes in amazing sleight of hand and illusions; and mentalist Chris Rayman, who truly delivers with world-class mind magic. (I’ve seen Rayman. The guy is good.) The magic is an all-ages proposition, though suggested for ages 10 and up.
The Magic All Stars are confirmed for this Saturday night, and also for March 28. If the response continues apace, we might get more shows as, right before our very eyes, Music City becomes Magic City. Presto chango!
