According to the Nov. 20, 2008 issue of Wall Street Journal, "Consumers are expected to dole out nearly $1 billion in fees for online dating sites this year...and the market is expected to expand by 10% in each of the next five years." (Apparently, there's no downturn when it comes to getting laid.) But one might also wonder how Stephen Sondheim in his prime might've approached love and the cyberspace experience. eHarmony: The Musical, perhaps? For those with more traditionalist leanings, GroundWorks Theatre presents the Nashville premiere of Craig Lucas and Norman Rene's revue inspired by 18 of Sondheim's pointed romance-themed songs. The tunes derive from the master’s many important works (Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, etc.), to which the authors have wedded the story of a young couple—male and female singles who are potential soulmates but have yet to meet. Revealing their dreams and heartaches through Sondheim's brilliantly precise lyrics and art-song melodies are sure-bet performers Megan Murphy and Mike Baum under the direction of Jack E. Chambers with Brian T. Hill supervising the music. The production is a joint venture with Franklin's Boiler Room Theatre, with performances at two venues, one week each.
