Fantastic news for anyone who's a fan of seeing very, very good repertory series at their neighborhood arthouse: Today, The Belcourt is announcing Jewels and Jim: Ridley's Believe It or Not, a weekend of classic films inspired by and paying tribute to late, great Scene editor Jim Ridley.
Jim, who worked at the Scene for roughly a quarter-century, died suddenly in April at age 50. For many years, Jim was a constant fixture at The Belcourt, where he could often be found holding court in the lobby, discussing Scorsese or De Palma or Cronenberg or Truffaut. Of course, the folks at The Belcourt already made an enormous and beautiful gesture by naming the building's lobby after Jim when they relaunched after months of massive overhauls. But the Jewels and Jim series? This is a cinephile's dream.
The 16-film series — which was curated by Belcourt staff and Jim’s friends and family — will take place Sept. 23-26, and weekend passes and ticket five-packs are available at The Belcourt's site. From Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets to Jonathan Demme’s Talking Heads concert documentary Stop Making Sense, from Chuck Jones’ classic animated short “Duck Amuck” to Chia-Liang Liu’s 8 Diagram Pole Fighter, the Jewels and Jim series, like Jim himself, is all over the map.
