Every June, cities across the country and around the world mark the anniversary of 1969’s Stonewall Uprising, when police raids in New York City’s Greenwich Village were met with resistance from the LGBTQ community. This year, Pride Month marks 56 years since that historic moment, and despite efforts from some lawmakers — particularly here in Tennessee, where the state’s GOP supermajority has put forth legislation targeting trans health care, same-sex marriage and even Pride flags — it remains an opportunity for joy and celebration.
In this week’s issue, the Scene talks to Nashville Pride president Tina Tousignant about advocacy and paving the way for LGBTQ youth. We also run down some of our favorite performers from this weekend’s upcoming Nashville Pride concerts, and interview two exceptional Nashville Pride performers — Jake Wesley Rogers and Martina Sorbara (aka Dragonette). Plus, contributor River James Witherow offers an essay on the meaning of picking your Pride outfit, and reporter Hannah Herner speaks with the team behind newly reopened gay bar Trax.
