Aisha Cousins and Carl Pope at TSU

Tennessee State will kick off the fall art season with an exhibition of work by two visiting artists who both seek to understand their cultural experiences through various symbols and signs. Carl Pope's The Bad Air Smelled of Roses is a letterpress print project that examines the way that language, specifically text, informs African-American identity. Bad Air will serve as a kind of preview for Pope's collaborative print show, which will be hosted at the University's Space for New Media in the spring of '10. Cousins also explores black identity, but focuses on the experience of African-American women by manipulating cultural signifiers like braided hair and double-dutch jump rope. Check out TSU's website for additional events associated with the show's run.
