Watch A Black Lady Sketch Show on HBO

It’s becoming an amazing year for Black women in comedy, particularly in late-night TV. The Amber Ruffin Show has been doing so well on NBC’s streaming service Peacock that the network has given the Late Night With Seth Meyers writer a Friday night slot. Over at Comedy Central on Friday nights, Doing the Most With Phoebe Robinson has the 2 Dope Queens alumna trying out activities with celebrity pals. And photogenic Instagram provocateur Ziwe Fumudoh has her own variety show — aptly titled Ziwe — coming in May on Showtime. But let’s not forget the skit-crazy sistas of the Issa Rae-produced A Black Lady Sketch Show, which starts its second season Friday night — of course — at 10 p.m. on HBO. Series creators Robin Thede, Ashley Nicole Black and Gabrielle Dennis return (Season 1 regular Quinta Brunson has moved on to create a sitcom pilot for ABC), and new faces Laci Mosley and Skye Townsend join in to serve up for-us-by-us sketch comedy that’s dark, savage and esoterically on-point. Let’s just say if you know all about Luster’s Pink Oil Moisturizer Hair Lotion, this show is made for you. CRAIG D. LINDSEY
