In the wee hours of March 3, 2020, a category EF3 tornado touched down west of Nashville, cutting its way across the city on a path that ultimately extended more than 60 miles. The cyclone began at 12:32 a.m. in Pegram, and then carved its deadly route from the western portion of the county near John C. Tune airport — where it did an estimated $93 million in damage — into North Nashville, Germantown, East Nashville, Donelson and Hermitage, before wreaking more havoc in Wilson and Smith counties.A massive amount of damage was done.

Lives were lost. The community pulled together to rebuild. Many of those rebuilding efforts are still ongoing, kneecapped as they have been by complications brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic — Nashville's first confirmed case of the virus arrived less than one week after the tornado. In East Nashville, some businesses are only now opening for the first time since the storm.

On the anniversary of the tornado, we look back at photos from a handful of the Scene's staff and contributing photographers — Eric England, Daniel Meigs, David S. Piñeros and Stephen Elliott.
