Tennessee Sen. Bo Watson, the upper chamber's Speaker Pro Tempore, defends legislation that protects teachers who engage students in questions about controversial science issues, such as evolution or global warming. He made his comments on Capitol Hill April 10, 2012, the same day Gov. Bill Halsam announced he would let the bill become law with out his signature. For more, go to http://www.tnreport.com.

Yesterday, after the

new, bold Gov. Bill Haslam

announced

he would withhold his signature from the so-called "Monkey Bill,"

allowing it to pass into law anyway, sponsor Bo Watson defended it. (See video above.) In announcing the decision, Haslam repeated his belief that the legislation does not change the state's current curriculum or scientific standards, adding that he doesn't believe "it accomplishes anything that isn't already acceptable in our schools."

We've reached out to the Department of Education about the bill, but haven't gotten any answers yet.
