Video Shows MNPD Captain Berating a Family Outside His Home

The stress of a global pandemic is weighing on all of us, and different people are handling it in different ways. For instance, some folks have used state-ordered family time to go on a bike ride. Others are launching into vulgar tirades incorporating the latest trends in online insults.

A new video, which you can watch in full below, appears to show both approaches.

The video, first reported by Scoop: Nashville on Sunday after it was posted on YouTube last week, shows Metro Nashville Police Department Captain Jason Reinbold berating a woman and her family who apparently stopped for a water-and-snack break on the bike path behind his Brentwood home. He appears angry that they've been sitting on the path near his backyard for some time. He invokes "social distancing" even as he walks closer to them, motioning for them to move along. At one point during the confrontation, his wife walks outside to retrieve the dog Reinbold is holding before returning inside. He continues, and even begins calling the woman "Karen" — an apparent reference to the name used by some people online to mock a particular sort of white woman.

A transcript of one brief part of the exchange:

Reinbold: "This is the most bizarre thing that I've ever seen."

Woman: "You know what, I don't need to hear you talk at all, actually — you're really ignorant."

Reinbold: "Then leave! You're right on the edge of my property."

Woman: "I know, I'm gonna sit right here."

Reinbold: "Children, you wanna stay and listen to me fucking cuss all day?"

Child: "Stop saying curse words!"

Throughout the confrontation, which goes on for almost two more minutes, the woman refers to Reinbold calling her a "fat ass" in front of her children, presumably before she started filming. Toward the end of the exchange, Reinbold says, "This is insanity."

MNPD spokesperson Don Aaron tells the Scene that the video is "under review."

"The Office of Professional Accountability will be interviewing Reinbold and will be attempting to interview the woman who recorded the video," Aaron says in an email.

We stopped for water and some cookies on a bike path in our neighborhood, when on duty #jasonreinbold of #mnpd started screaming obscenities at the kids. He was angry that we had stopped near his property to rest.
