Update (12:25 p.m.): The MNPD says that Holbert has died at Skyline Medical Center. Baker is in stable condition following surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.Â
Original post: A Metro police officer and a 31-year-old woman are both in critical condition after a shooting in a Dollar General parking lot on Brick Church Pike Friday morning. The Metro Nashville Police Department has identified the officer as Josh Baker and the woman as Nika Holbert.
At a briefing on the scene, MNPD spokesperson Don Aaron said that Baker was conducting a traffic stop on a black Camaro, the owner of which has six outstanding warrants. Aaron said Holbert does not own the car but was driving. That's when a shootout ensued, Aaron said, alleging that Holbert fired at the officer. Aaron also said that Baker was wearing a body camera, the footage from which is currently being retrieved.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced that they are investigating the incident. Aaron also said that the Metro Community Oversight Board was on the scene.Â
Police cordoned off a long stretch of Brick Church Pike after the shooting, as MNPD squad cars and other law enforcement, including ATF officers, swarmed the store parking lot at Brick Church Pike and Ewing Drive. Across the street, onlookers speculated from a gas-station parking lot about the morning's events, phones raised to film the law-enforcement and media swarm.
