Jim Cooper, Unopposed, Wins 16th Term

U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Nashville) won re-election Tuesday after facing no Republican opposition for the 5th Congressional District that includes Davidson, Dickson and part of Cheatham counties.

Cooper will return to Washington for his 16th term, a tenure split between his current stint in the 5th district and an earlier run in the 4th Congressional District.

Though he did not face opposition in the general election, Cooper successfully fended off a primary challenge earlier this year. Former public defender Keeda Haynes won nearly 40 percent of the vote in August, the first significant primary challenge of Cooper since he won the seat.

Cooper lists “opposing Trump” as a top priority. As of Tuesday night, it remains unclear whether Trump will win re-election.
