Gov. Phil Bredesen, who refused to intervene on behalf of legislation to give us wine in grocery stores, has found another, more pressing issue to dodge—genocide in Darfur. He tells The Tennessean it's OK with him if state pension money is invested in Sudan. According to Bredesen, it's more important to "professionally maximize" the state's financial return than to take a moral stand against genocide. "I think you get into very tricky waters if you start trying to tell pension fund managers to do anything but to professionally maximize their return," Bredesen said. He said he opposed the idea of telling the fund managers, "Here's a political consideration you have to take into account."
