A few years back, Jabe Beyer packed up the boatload of music awards he’d won in Boston and became yet another member of the massive Beantown-to-Music City migration. Since then, he’s become a fixture of East Nashville’s thriving roots-rock scene, whether performing with his own band or taking the stage at one of the star-studded ’70s rock tribute nights at the Wash (owned by another Bostonian, Jamie Rubin).
Besides having a cool name (seriously, have you ever known another Jabe?) Beyer has a distinctive voice that at various times echoes a seemingly disparate range of vocal influences — Dylan, Bono, Springsteen, Neil Young — while retaining its own character. And his talent for songwriting has gotten him placements in HBO’s True Blood, Fox’s Lie to Me and a few indie films.
Beyer turned up the rock a bit on his most recent album, Rocket Surgery: Highlights include the Costello-ish “Just Can’t Die,” “I Just Wanna Know Why” (featuring some rhythm guitar that would make Keith Richards smile) and the rowdy “Holy Rollers (Rolled You Away),” which suggests Beyer may just have a future in glam-rock. Beyer plays at The Family Wash every Thursday in June.
