Tune in to ESPN tonight at 6 p.m. for an episode of E:60 — a news magazine-style show where Jeremy Schapp and others sit around and look at each other all serious and "pitch" stories to each other — featuring the
Nashville RBIprogram. (RBI stands for Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities, and is a program of Major League Baseball.) You may recall our
feature on Reggie Whittemore, the tireless head of Nashville RBI, from our inaugural People Issue two years ago. In it, Whittemore talks about growing up in the projects, working his way up through the minor leagues, and his work providing opportunities and equipment to Nashville kids who want to play baseball:
"Baseball is not an easy game to play," Whittemore says. "Mitts are expensive, bats are expensive. You've got to have a desire to play or else you're never gonna do it. That's what we're trying to give 'em. We're just trying to give these kids the chance."
Tonight's episode of E:60 features 11-year-old Ishmael Arnold, who ran back into his family's rapidly flooding house to retrieve his bag of baseball gear. Vandy alum and Baseball Tonight analyst Buster Olney made the trip to Nashville to film the segment earlier this summer. Folks will be gathering to watch the show together at The Frayed Knot (in the old Nick and Rudy’s building at 204 21st Ave. S., near the Vanderbilt campus).
And if you want to support youth baseball in Nashville, you can donate or attend their annual wine tasting fundraiser at Sambuca on Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets to the tasting are $75 — register by email to Eric Ward, eward [at] mpf [dot] com. Check out a clip after the jump.
