Mapping the Music City Miracle

Titans Players:

FB Lorenzo Neal (41): Catches the Bills’ squib kick near the 25-yard line on the Titans’ end of the field, hands it off.

TE Frank Wycheck (89): Takes the handoff from Neal and runs parallel to the 25-yard line; reaches midfield, then throws a lateral toward the Titans’ sideline.

WR Kevin Dyson (87): Catches lateral and runs up the Titans’ sideline and into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. Dyson hadn’t practiced the play with the rest of the team and wasn’t supposed to be on the field. Coach Jeff Fisher had him fill in for Derrick Mason (who was out with a concussion) because he had been a kick returner at the University of Utah.

LB Terry Killens (50): Delivers block to the kicker, the only player who could have stopped Dyson once the play developed.

SS Perry Phenix (35)

WR Isaac Byrd (83)

LB Greg Favors (51)

TE Larry Brown (84)

MLB Doug Colman (59)

RB Rodney Thomas (20)

TE Jackie Harris (88)

Notable Bills Player:

K Steve Christie (2): Had just kicked a 41-yard field goal to put the Bills up 16-15 with 16 seconds left in the game. Just as he was getting ready to kick off to the (as it turns out, very well-prepared) Titans, commentator Paul Maguire said, “The one thing I would not do is kick this thing — squib kick this thing short.” Joe Theismann returned: “No, I’d kick it deep. I would make them use as much of the clock and take my chances on a return.”

Where Are They Now?

Commentary on the Play

ABC: Mike Patrick, Joe Theismann and Paul Maguire

“The one thing that I would not do is kick this thing — squib kick this thing short.”

“I’d kick it deep and make them use as much of the clock and take my chances on a return, as opposed to squib kicking it, letting them get it with about 12 seconds to go and a possibility for a play.”

“Dyson and Byrd are deep.”

“Taken by Neal, he gives it to Wycheck. Wycheck — that looked like a forward pass!”

“Taken by Dyson”

“Dyson down the sideline!”

“Dyson’s gonna go all the way, and there is no flag!”

“No flags on the play, it is a touchdown!”

Titans radio: Mike Keith, Pat Ryan

“Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now.”

“Christie kicks it high and short. It’s gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25, pitches it back to Wycheck, he throws it across the field to Dyson”

“He’s got something”

“30 … 40”

“He’s got something!”

“50 … 40”

“He’s got it! HE’S GOT IT!”

“20 ... 10 ... 5 … Endzone! TOUCHDOWN TITANS!”

“There are NO. FLAGS. ON. THE. FIELD. IT’S A MIRACLE, TENNESSEE HAS PULLED A MIRACLE!”
