If you've found yourself scattered, smothered and covered and in need of a meal to set your night right, chances are you've dropped in at a Waffle House in the wee hours of the morning. Perhaps you've noticed that their jukebox now includes a catalog of self-referential songs — not kidding, the House has its own record label.
Following his recent support of Jason Isbell's saddest country song ever, Stephen Colbert and his team put together a little ditty that they hope will make it on Awful Waffle jukeboxes nationwide. "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Knuckleheads" lays down the rules for patrons in all their various states of sobriety — all the more authoritatively since it's sung by country ace Sturgill Simpson.
Below, see Colbert and Simpson duet on the song with the Late Show house band Jon Batiste and Stay Human providing some extra thump and swagger. Afterwards, see Simpson and his band, augmented by a delectably gritty horn section, romp through "Brace for Impact (Live a Little)," the lead single from their hot-off-the-presses record A Sailor's Guide to Earth. Consider it a preview of what to expect when they roll into the Ryman for two nights at the end of October.
Sturgill Simpson and Stephen introduce their brand-new Waffle House song, "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Knuckleheads."

Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"
