In the run up to their long-awaited sophomore album, old-school rocker JD McPherson and his band have launched a video series in which they collaborate with musicians they respect, aptly titled "Time Well Spent with People Worth Knowing." The latest TWSWPWK features McPherson and Nikki Lane absolutely dominating in a somewhat unusual context for both singers: "How Insensitive," a melancholy bossa nova standard composed by Brazilian jazz master Antônio Carlos Jobim. Lane and McPherson's take is a bit like
Astrud Gilberto's version, but just a little more spare; it also features a percussion player in a Black Flag t-shirt. The performance was filmed live-in-studio at Vance Powell and Mitch Dane's Sputnik Sound, and that's all I'm going to say because it's beautiful and you should go ahead and watch it.
Seems like McPherson and band have been spending quality time with several Nashvillians: An earlier entry in the series, filmed during a soundcheck for McPherson's October run at The Stone Fox, shows the band tearing through "Hilbilly Blues" with Los Straitjackets' Eddie Angel hot-dogging on lead guitar. Calling it a drastic change in mood is quite an understatement, but it's also very much worth your time: see it after the jump.
