If you've never heard Tuvan throat singing, it's pretty mind-blowing stuff. Vocalists in the tradition can sing two and three notes at once, and the result is pretty hypnotic. It almost sounds like someone singing through a flanger or phase shifter, but it's all natural.
The Alash ensemble features master throat singers from the Central Asia republic of Tuva, accompanied by traditional Tuvan instruments. The group was featured on Bela Fleck and the Flecktones' Grammy-winning album Jingle All the Way. (Nothing says Christmas like banjo and Tuvan throat-singing, right?)
Alash performs tonight at 6 p.m. at 3rd & Lindsley's new backstage room. It's a rare chance to see some pretty amazing performers, and there's no cover, though donations are appreciated.
