Back in May, Nashvillians were distraught to see West End landmark Sub Stop close its doors after 40 years, as its building was sold and demolished. But here's some good news for fans of the generously portioned deli torpedoes and the electric pink facade that tells you where to find them: In October, both will have a new home in Murfreesboro — and before long, once again in Music City.

Sub Stop's new owner is Travis Millwood, a California native who moved his family to Murfreesboro and opened a food distribution business in 2005. On a short break from loading tools into the freshly painted Sub Stop building at 306 Vine St. near Murfreesboro's public square, Millwood tells the Scene that the restaurant was one of his longtime clients, and its founders, the Grizzard family, became family friends. When the Grizzards announced plans to sell Sub Stop's name and secret recipes, Millwood took a look at strong projections for Murfreesboro's population growth and decided to take up the mantle, selling his company and purchasing the business outright.

Will there be any changes to the offerings? Not likely. "If you watch the News2 video, that customer just happened to be walking by," says Millwood of Tom Harris, whose thorough recommendations are the hallmarks of a regular. "People are in love with the menu."

The new location is set to open its doors Oct. 24, just in time for the Harvest Festival at Cannonsburgh, the nearby pioneer village which is home to Uncle Dave Macon Days and the recently rebuilt World's Largest Cedar Bucket. And plans for further growth are already underway: Enthusiastic about Nashville's own growth, Millwood says he's meeting this week with property owners for preliminary discussions about a Nashville location, which he hopes to open in early 2016. A location in Brentwood is on the horizon for 2017, as well. Keep an eye on Sub Stop's Facebook page for updates.
