Here, near dusk on Taylor Swift's 23rd birthday, we at Cream HQ have just watched
the videofor her single "I Knew You Were Trouble" — one of the Max Martin-assisted tracks from her
critically acclaimed, very-many-copies-selling album Red. This is the song that some critics
hopedwould be released as a single just so they could put it on their
Pazz and Jopballot, then realized that, with all the turmoil at the Voice, there might not even be a Pazz and Jop ballot. (They went out today!) In any case, the video, like the song, is gloriously melodramatic. It's also very, very widescreen.
You know how she makes fun of "hipsters" on that song "22"? Well, who's wearing a fedora now, Taylor Swift?!
Anyway, the video has a lot of meaningful side-eye, exasperated armpit-flashing and a gnarly bar brawl — speaking of, I might argue that your average dude in 2012 with a Misfits patch on the back of his vest is more likely to Instagram his small-batch bacon than kick some skinny Swift-dating dude's ass, but I digress. Oh, and is it just me or does that all this writhing around in the desert have some relation-to-slash-resonance-with the voluptuous horror of Lana Del Rey? This will require further viewing, but in the meantime I give this video 1,000 stars out of 1,205.
