Over the weekend, Chris Stapleton made his Saturday Night Live debut, with Star Wars star Adam Driver hosting. Maybe SNL's writers missed an opportunity for some additional additional Star Wars yuks while they had the leonine country singer on the set, but they did have one helluva music segment, featuring the rocking "Parachute" and the slow-burning, head-shaking "Nobody to Blame" from Stapleton's CMA-sweeping debut, Traveller.
Stapleton was joined by the same deluxe outfit that backed him at the Pilgrimage Festival last September, featuring Stapletons' wife Morgane on harmony vocals, Willie Nelson's longtime harmonica man Mickey Raphael, the late Waylon Jennings' steel player Robby Turner (doubling on organ), Daren Shumaker (whose regular gig is running sound for Stapleton) on mandolin, and ace producer Dave Cobb on acoustic rhythm guitar. Cobb, by the way, is set to take over RCA Studio A (where Traveller was recorded) from Ben Folds beginning April 1.
