Since her 2011 country-leaning debut Have You Met Lera Lynn?, Nashville-residing singer-songwriter Lera Lynn shifted to embrace a full range of rock and pop sounds, especially evident on her 2016 LP Resistor. Last we heard from Lynn, she was fully embracing her dark side on the Fiona Apple-meets-Nick Cave standalone single "Image."Â
That was a year-and-a-half ago, so it's pretty rad to hear something new from the immensely talented singer. And that's not all: Her forthcoming record, called Plays Well With Others, is a duets album, a format that shines when innovative material and collaborators that can deliver a lot of emotional nuance are part of the mix. It's due for a June 22 release via John Paul White and Ben Tanner's label Single Lock Records.
Above, check out a music video shot by the great Alysse Gafkjen for the first single, "Lose Myself." White is Lynn's partner on this contemplative, noir-tinged tune about the struggle to maintain one's own identity in a close relationship. The camera follows the pair and their bandmates as they work on the song in the studio, occasionally blending separate images of Lynn and White together so for just a brief moment, it's tough to distinguish one from the other.
Lynn's other duet partners on Plays Well include Rodney Crowell, Peter Bradley Adams, Nicole Atkins, Andrew Combs and Dylan LeBlanc. All of those folks, along with Caleb Caudle, will appear at a special release celebration for the record at 3rd & Lindsley on June 22. Tickets are $20 and on sale now. (Shovels and Rope and J.D. McPherson are not playing the gig, but they are on the album. You can preorder it in your choice of formats right here.)
