The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is the premier late night talk show on CBS, airing at 11:35pm EST, streaming online via CBS All Access, and delivered to the International Space Station on a USB drive taped to a weather balloon. Every night, viewers can expect: Comedy, humor, funny moments, witty interviews, celebrities, famous people, movie stars, bits, humorous celebrities doing bits, funny celebs, big group photos of every star from Hollywood, even the reclusive ones, plus also jokes.
Across a pretty broad spectrum of fans, one of the most eagerly anticipated albums of 2021 is Julien Baker’s third LP Little Oblivions. Baker, a Memphis native, came out of the gate strong with her 2015 debut Sprained Ankle, recorded while she was studying at MTSU, and she upped the ante with the 2017 follow-up Turn Out the Lights. Baker’s part of a cadre of songwriters who’ve been reminding us that intense emotional expression in music can be nuanced and intriguing and not, y’know, maudlin and cringey in the manner of Aughts emo songwriters at their worst.
The Little Oblivions song “Faith Healer” is a great case in point. The character singing in the piece is desperate for an emotional connection. There are clear signs that the person they are singing to is better at convincing others of their abilities — like a faith healer or a seller of patent medicines — than actually delivering on their promises. But the singer is open and willing to fall for the subterfuge, if only to have something to feel.
Thursday night, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert aired a performance vid of Baker and her band performing the song for an empty house at Exit/In. Check out the clip above, and visit Baker’s website or Bandcamp or your favorite record store to preorder the album, which is out Feb. 26 via Matador Records.
