Though Nashville has been my home for years, my heart still aches for the Pacific Northwest air, especially during the winter. I miss the stinging, cold drizzle that never really shifts over into actual rain. I miss the dense blanket of fog that settles in around the base of the Space Needle every January morning. And I really miss existing in such predictably dreary weather that perfectly fits the moodiness that can sink in when pessimistically facing another year.
Then I stumbled upon "2017," latest video from local experimental folk artist German Error Message (thanks, "Nashville" tag on Bandcamp!). All those Northwest vibes started to feel so real. Once I hit play, my toes and fingers got a little cold and the daylight dimmed just slightly. In just over two minutes, "2017" manages to encapsulate the feeling of the kind of winter I grew up with and came to love. There's a striking Phil Elverum/Microphones vibe in there, too, with lovely experimental electronic flourishes fluttering about — it sounds like it was recorded in an attic bedroom of a drafty old house that overlooks Lake Washington.
I may no be able to afford a plane ticket back to Seattle right now, but it turns out German Error Message has brought the Pacific Northwest to Nashville. Now all I have to worry about is whether listening to this song over and over again for the rest of the day will cause my Vitamin D levels to crash. I better take a multivitamin just to be safe.
