There’s a good chance you’ve heard Southern rockers The Bretheren at work — either in their decade-plus-long tenure as country singer Elle King’s backing band, or individual members’ work with artists ranging from Dawn Richard to Rufus Wainwright to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The group has been hard at work in the studio and is finally ready to step into the spotlight, introducing their own original work via their debut single “Meet Me in the Back Room.”

The tune is an ominous slice of growly garage rock — a Nuggets flavor with contemporary high fidelity. The subject matter is the too-common situation of people getting scared by the state of the world and banding together in secret for vigilante action, as singer-guitarist Joey McClellan snarls in the refrain: “We can change the guard / And rise against the big doom.”

The group — rounded out by Dave “Moose” Sherman on keys, Paulie DeVincenzo on bass and Dave Scalia on drums — recorded the track at their Madison home base, Bretheren Sound, and it’s out now on all streaming platforms. Today, we’re very pleased to premiere a special performance video they’ve recorded live, for a little bit of extra rawness, at Bretheren Sound. Watch as Hennen Payne’s and director Rett Rogers’ cameras follow the group around the mood-lit space. They seem to have filled every inch of the room with time-tested tools of rock, including beefy amps, a piano and a tonewheel organ.

The release also marks the debut of Hot Waltz, a new label launched by a name you’ll know if you’ve followed rock in the South over the past two decades: Parker Gispert, singer-songwriter and solo artist as well as frontman of much-loved pop-rocking trio The Whigs. Keep an eye on the Instagram profiles of the label and The Bretheren for updates.
