Seventeen years ago, John Prine bounced back from a bout with cancer by releasing the landmark duets record In Spite of Ourselves. The album used superbly intimate performances and some of the best country songs — hell, best in any genre — of the century to paint an honest portrait of the complicated, heartbreaking and hilariously gross thing called romance.
Just in time for his return to the Mother Church on Sept. 30, Prine will drop another duets collection, with an equally outstanding team of singing partners and songs: Amanda Shires on "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke," Miranda Lambert on "Cold Cold Heart," Morgane Stapleton on "Look At Us," Kacey Musgraves on "Mental Cruelty" and many more.
Below, peep the full track list and stream the opening song, in which Prine and Iris DeMent seem to pick up right where they left off with the lovably bent couple in the song "In Spite of Ourselves" — despite the fact that "Ourselves" is an original tune, and "Who's Gonna Take the Garbage Out" was first made a hit by Loretta Lynn and Ernest Tubb in 1969.
