Another Look: Maggie Rose, ‘Half Moon’

Genre-defying, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Maggie Rose — who you might have seen recently around town making a guest appearance with Little Feat at the Ryman or duetting with Melissa Etheridge at 3rd and Lindsley during AmericanaFest — released her fifth studio album Half Moon on Aug. 14. Across its 10 tracks, Rose moves from emotional ballads about feeling unseen by someone you love to upbeat numbers about weekend flings, capturing both the exhilaration and suffocation of life.

This evolution is not new for Rose, whose sound has moved from country to soul, Americana and beyond. The Nashville artist has built a reputation for embracing change and a voice capable of carrying just about any song. Her newest record turns that flexibility inward, exploring change, desire and finding your footing as life changes around you.

The record’s moods span playfulness and vulnerability, providing a sound that will hook any kind of listener. The title track describes the fear that comes with entering a new stage of life, all beneath an expansive strings-heavy arrangement. “Red Shoes,” on the other hand, brings a more carefree energy to the album, detailing a night out and the freedom of feeling confident in your own skin — and, obviously, your sanguine-hued footwear. 

Throughout the album, Rose’s personality takes precedence, helping the songs feel personal and not just polished. Songs like “Hiding in Plain Sight” and “Gentle Man” give Rose the opportunity to meditate on identity, vulnerability and tenderness. Although these songs slow it down with more subtle instrumentation, they still prove that Rose doesn’t need to belt a track to command its emotions.

Like its title implies, Half Moon reveals that being incomplete and being whole aren’t necessarily opposites. Sometimes you’re simply seeing a part of yourself in a different light.
